Scouting Badges Courses
Cub Scouts
We offer a 2 hour course to cover the following requirements towards the Cyclist Activity Badge:
- Be able to mount and dismount properly
- Understand the need for keeping the bicycle in a roadworthy condition, and how to do this
- Be able to clean and oil a bicycle. Show how to pump up the tyres and how to mend a puncture
- Understand the need for keeping a bicycle locked when leaving it unattended
- Make a poster to promote road safety to pedestrians or cyclists.
- Understand the need for lights and reflective clothing. Discuss with your leader or other Cub Scouts the safety measures necessary for riding in poor conditions
- Under observation, in a safe place, go for a short ride to show that you can ride safely and confidently
Price: £30 for 15 people, help is required from other leaders
Scouts
We offer a 2 hour course to cover the following requirements towards the Cyclist Activity Badge:
Demonstrate an ability to carry out essential maintenance and repairs, including the following:
- check and adjust the brakes
- check and adjust the gear change
- adjust the seat and handlebars to a correct height
- remove a wheel and locate and repair a puncture
- check and adjust your cycle helmet
- maintain a set of lights
Complete the following requirements:
- Explain what extra precautions should be taken when cycling in the dark or in wet weather. Understand why motor vehicles take longer to stop in the wet
- Demonstrate an ability to control a cycle along a slalom course.
- Show an understanding of the Highway Code, including road signs and helmet use
- Have a basic knowledge of first aid and what to do in the case of accidents
- Have a working knowledge of map reading. Be able to orientate a map using a compass or conspicuous features. Be able to estimate distances and times taken to travel
Price: £30 for 12 people, help is required from other leaders
